Wealth God’s Way

Teach and command these things. Anyone who teaches otherwise and does not consent to wholesome words, to the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to godly doctrine is conceited and knows nothing. He has a morbid disposition for controversy and verbal disputes, from which come envy, strife, blasphemies, evil speculations,  constant disputes by men of corrupt minds, being destitute of the truth, and supposing that financial gain is godliness. Withdraw yourself from such men.

But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain that we can carry nothing out.  If we have food and clothing, we shall be content with these things. But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare and into many foolish and harmful lusts, which drown men in ruin and destruction. For the love of money is the root of all evil. While coveting after money, some have strayed from the faith and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. 1 TIMOTHY 6:2-10 MEV

Money is not the root of all evil, as some erroneously teach; the love of it is. This is because the love of money is a manifestation of fear, specifically fear of lack. This was the original sin that Eve fell into – believing the lie of lack. Lucifer himself believed this lie (Ezekiel 28:4,5,15,16) and became Satan – the adversary – i.e. the one who opposes himself.

It is inconceivable that any lack could come from God. Lack only exists in consciousness and that is consciousness defiled by the lie that lack is your portion. Iniquity began in Lucifer when he saw himself as lacking status, authority and wealth. Eve believed the lie that she lacked something to make her godlike. The truth is, she and Adam were already perfectly like their Creator and lacked nothing. The lie was that the thing forbidden them – fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil – would have given them more than they had or made them more than they were. The truth was, eating this fruit would make them less. Believing the lie, they ended up indeed lacking.

All Satan has to offer is lack. God is the King of Abundance. Satan cannot offer anything but deception.

Millions on planet earth oppose themselves because they believe in scarcity. They choose to live in the evil one’s kingdom of lack. There is no lack in the Kingdom of God. The believer has complete access to the resources of this Kingdom and is free to manifest these resources on this planet through faith. So the Christian need not live in the scarcity paradigm of this world system.

That said, Paul here dismantles a possible deception that people who have wealth are therefore all believers. He says that financial gain does not necessarily equate to godliness. People often cheat, steal and swindle their way to financial plenty. So wealth is no guarantee of godliness.

Yet, right on the other hand, Paul says that godliness is a guarantee of financial success. Money might not be proof that you have God but having God in your life is great gain. Of course, this is spiritual gain but the riches in glory are meant to be manifest on this plane. So financial abundance is available, provided it comes the right way. That way is the way of stewardship.

Walking in the billionaire blessing of Abraham is your covenant right and you can manifest unlimited wealth here in this life. But the purpose of this billionaire blessing is not to make you JR Ewing; it is to make you a distributor of Kingdom resources. You are here to manifest wealth for Kingdom purposes, not to build your own empire and be like the tycoons of the world system.

In terms of your own material needs, you can be, as Paul says here, content with just having your basic needs met, such as food and clothing. But if you have a family to feed or a payroll to meet, you need much more than subsistence levels of supply. If others depend on you, you simply must have abundance.

Groups such as the Puritans have exemplified this. Many Puritans lived frugal lives, eschewing ostentatious displays of wealth yet racking up huge fortunes, out of which they built schools, universities and churches and helped the poor. These believers had a highly developed sense of stewardship in their endeavours as well as great faith in their election by God to exercise dominion in society.

A man or woman enthused with a purpose in building wealth for the sake of the Kingdom is an unstoppable force.

The determining factor here is which system we are operating under. We are either desiring to manifest Kingdom resources as stewards or desiring to get rich in the natural. It is the latter system which will see us brought to ruin and pierced through with many sorrows. That is the Mammon system of this world, the Babylonian economy God has purposed to destroy.

We see this in these verses further on in 1 Timothy chapter 6:

Command those who are rich in this world that they not be conceited, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who richly gives us all things to enjoy. Command that they do good, that they be rich in good works, generous, willing to share, and laying up in store for themselves a good foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of eternal life. 1 TIMOTHY 6:17-19 MEV

Here Paul gives a charge to those who are “rich in this world.” He is addressing those who have money and giving a way for people who have money to bring their riches under stewardship and make them Kingdom resources. It is alright to be rich but don’t trust the world system of economics. It is okay to be rich in the world if God is your Source.

That is the key to it all. Whether you made your money wheeling and dealing in the world system or by the Kingdom system, you make your wealth holy by placing it under the Lordship of Christ and calling it Kingdom!

Godliness with contentment is great gain. This means you function in the Kingdom, with God as your Source. Without that sense of inner contentment it is easy to get sucked into a place where you fear lack and begin to function in the world system of avarice again.

Functioning in the Kingdom is recognising – BY FAITH – that you are an heir of the Kingdom and that all things are yours. You are a partaker in Abraham’s billionaire blessing and that there is no lack to you because you fear YHWH. You MUST develop consciousness in this wonderful truth because what you retain in consciousness is what will manifest in your life.

There is no “getting rich” for the believer, only manifesting on this physical plane what belongs to you already in glory realms. You are already rich and superabundantly funded over there in the invisible Kingdom of God!! As Paul says here in 1 Timothy, those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a snare i.e. a trap. The trap is that they are locking themselves out of Kingdom reality, where all needs are already supplied and our wealth is infinite. This trap is being locked into the carnal realm of lust and Paul calls it straying from the faith and thus they have pierced themselves through with many sorrows. Unnecessary ones.

When you drop out of faith and love, you end up mired in fear and lust. Faith knows that God has supplied already because faith recognises the love of God toward us. But fear sees lack and cannot recognise the love so the auto response of the fearful man or woman is then to lust after that which he/she perceives he/she lacks. Lust is energised by fear of lack and is the opposite of faith.

We could say it this way: Money is not God but can become so to the fearful man or woman. This is serving Mammon. It is fear-based economics. But to the covenant man or woman, God is money. He is our Source of supply and our portion. He is our gold and silver.

Yes, the Almighty will be your gold and your precious silver; JOB 22:25 MEV

Wealth on its own is nothing. It is no proof of godliness or relationship with God. But a relationship with God IS a guarantee of provision, plenty and prosperity. He is our Provider, our Financier and our Backer. In Genesis 15:1 God tells us He is our exceedingly great reward, the literal Hebrew of which means our rapidly-increasing money supply!

Now, as I said, this is not to make us all tycoons like those men rich in the world system. It is as we read here in 1 Timothy, to do good, to be rich in good works, generous, willing to share, and to lay up in store for ourselves a good foundation for the coming age, so that we may take hold of eternal life.

This is wealth and abundance with a purpose, which is to help plant the Kingdom of Heaven here on planet earth. It is stewardship business and carnal men and women have no part in it. It is selfless service because it necessitates the acceptance of responsibility on the part of we stewards to handle money and administer it for Kingdom purposes. We do not wish to be lazy stewards who refuse to multiply the resources given to us.

One last word on this for now. If you have a steward’s heart, you can enjoy the wealth. God gives us richly and lavishly – not stingily and sparsely – all things to enjoy. It is not wrong to have fun being wealthy and to rejoice in seeing the Kingdom manifest in your life. It is okay to have money, dear brother and sister. Just don’t let the money have you. Knowing how to abound is as much a part of living as knowing how to stay strong in faith during lean times.

Just remember that God has pleasure in your prosperity when it comes His way.

Increase Is In Your Mouth

532408_374816429253424_1869537211_nA man’s stomach will be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth; and with the increase of his lips will he be filled. PROVERBS 18:20 MEV

Your faith-filled confession or affirmation is vital to your financial state of affairs. What you SAY determines what you will GET in life. Nowhere is this more applicable than in your financial situation.

Examples of speech where this could work against you with devastating consequences include statements like: “I never seem to get ahead financially” and “I never have enough money.” Also, saying stuff like “Life is hard in this economy” and “There isn’t enough business to go round” will not serve your best interests.

If you are going to walk in financial superabundance you MUST change what you are saying about money – if, of course, what you are saying is negative and doom-laden.

You have been divinely created and designed to alter circumstances by speaking life-filled words rather than words of death and destruction. According to the above verse in Proverbs, you literally eat by what you say and you can see increase in your income by the words you speak.

It’s easy to prove this and silence sceptics. If you can get a sceptic to say only positive things about his/her financial affairs and leave off negative talking, even the most hardened will have to admit there is a very powerful truth at the heart of this message. In other words, it works!! And anybody can prove it for themselves if they will only be diligent in applying it.

Your faith-filled words can dominate – and eradicate – lack, penury, debt and poverty from your life. You can literally speak yourself into a prosperous, superabundant life – if you will say what God said concerning supply and finances.

God’s Word has much to say about the infinite supply that is yours to claim in Christ. By speaking what the Bible says, you can change your income levels massively.

The next verse in Proverbs 18 goes further:

Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit. PROVERBS 18:21 MEV

As one translation says: “The power of the tongue is life and death— those who love to talk will eat what it produces.” You ingest either death or life by what you speak. That means you will enjoy plenty and abundance or scarcity and lack. The quality of life you experience is dependent upon what you say.

This goes beyond positive thinking, or positive speaking. The message of supply in the Word of God has the supernatural miracle power in itself to produce what it says. The supply you speak of manifests in physical form when you release the words. This is the Shazam! of financial supply, the Aladdin’s Lamp of life, the real magic of the universe.

For truly I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, he will have whatever he says. MARK 11:23 MEV

Supply is yours by saying so. That is the faith secret of the Bible. You have what you say. This is why confessing poverty is so devastatingly wrong and why confessing you have superabundant supply is a must.

The secret of your financial increase is by affirming you have it.

Say this over and over until supply manifests in your life:

“YHWH is my rapidly-increasing money supply today and always, in JESUS’ NAME!”

God’s Antidote For Poverty

Jesus came preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom.

And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people. MATTHEW 9:35

This Gospel is a good news message to the poor (Luke 4:18,19 and Isaiah 61:1,2).

The Kingdom of God coming is good news to poor folks.

What we have not understood is that the Gospel is first and foremost a message that liberates people from penury and lack. Of course, the Early Church knew this and certain groups since have known it, such as the Puritans. The so-called social gospel is fine but it is built upon human endeavour and human empathy. The true Gospel of God is supernatural and based on miracle power and divine compassion. Giving a man a few cans of beans to feed his family for a few days is not the same as breaking centuries of curse and kicking out spirits of lack and poverty from the man’s life.

We must grasp once and for all that the roots of poverty are spiritual. Poverty is a spirit. Destitution is a spirit. Debt is a spirit. These spirits are sent to oppress and keep man down in the pit of despair and misery.

Part of this is to understand that in the spirit, things are often the reverse from the natural. For example, in the natural we see depression as the result of poverty. But this is not how it is in the spirit realm. The truth is that depression is the cause of poverty. This is because what we call depression is actually oppression.

Think of the Great Depression as we call it. What happened? Well, people got poor and then got depressed, right? In the natural, yes, that’s what looked to have happened. But the truth is that all the riches that were there prior to the Great Depression were still there. All the gold didn’t vanish. The coal and salt and diamonds were still in all the mines. The money was still in existence. The mansions that people lived in were still standing.

What actually happened was that men were deceived by spirits of fear and oppression to believe they lacked. It’s interesting that many fortunes were made during the Great Depression by people who refused to give in to fear and saw opportunity where others feared ruin. Instead of looking at share certificates and seeing security, people looked at them and saw disaster.

Of course, part of this was because people trusted in uncertain riches and not in the infinite supply of YHWH Yireh. But the truth is that fear spread like a virus and wiped out the economy.

You must deal with the root of the problem. That root is not in the natural. Poverty is not just a natural thing. Nor is it mental, which is why positive thinking has limited value when it comes to liberating people from poverty and failure.

The solution to poverty is found in the spirit.

That is why Jesus said to decree: “Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven.” This prayer is a thermonuclear weapon against forces of poverty and indebtedness. The Kingdom is a kingdom of supply. It is the answer to poverty. It is good news to a poor man because there is no lack, penury or impoverishment in the Kingdom. Neither is there just getting by, just barely enough or even enough. The Kingdom is one of opulence, superabundance and luxury beyond human imaginings.

God does not want us to settle for enough. Yes,we should be content that our needs are met. But that is only the starting point. The Puritans understood this. They lived lives of modest comfort and even frugality – while stockpiling huge fortunes in business which they used to fund the building of churches, universities and schools.

You can be a multi-billionaire and you are supposed to be. As long as you retain the heart of a steward. And there is nothing wrong with you enjoying your wealth, either.

I believe God wants to take us all to the place where we are all so rich that we get bored with wealth and the only real fun we get with it is to bless others with it. This is what 2 Corinthians 9:8 is all about:

And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work. 2 CORINTHIANS 9:8 NKJV

God wants to bring you to a place where you give out of your plenty, not your shortage. This might not be what prosperity preachers tell you but it is Bible. Now, there is nothing wrong with you giving out of your lack. You can find that in the Bible, too. But we need to move beyond a place where we see prosperity is about our giving and to a place where we see it is about the Giver. You don’t get rich by giving. You get rich by being saved. Jesus bore your poverty and gave you His riches (2 Corinthians 8:9). Prosperity is not a works issue; it is a FAVOUR issue, thank God!

Jesus died to get Abraham’s billionaire blessing upon you (Galatians 3:13,14). You are redeemed from the curse, which includes the curse of poverty, failure and oppressiion. It doesn’t matter how many generations of your ancestors lived in hardship and penury – the truth is, YOU don’t have to.

Salvation is not just about the sweet by and by; it is also for the here and now. God has equipped every believer with all that is necessary to go from a life of failure, want and destitution to one of victory, success, wealth and honour. He has made us kings and priests in His Kingdom.

God has crowned you with glory and honour. Reign in life, dear brother and sister!

How To Come Out Of Lack

Remember that the Gospel is Good News to the poor.

The poor are those who have a consciousness of lack.

Your problem is not that you lack – it is that you think you do.

Jesus Christ obliterated lack on the cross. Lack and shortfall were never God’s plan for man. Adam knew no lack in Eden. Indeed, it was believing the lie of lack that saw Eve eat the forbidden fruit. Not being allowed to eat this fruit was not a lacking of something any more than not injecting heroin into your veins is a lack.

God’s nature is superabundance. He cannot bless us in a parsimonious manner – He is the God of more than enough. If you need a bus ride home, God will give you a fleet of limousines and a team of chaffeurs for the rest of your life. That is His nature; He drowns even the notion of lack with oceans of supply. If this is not the God you know, you need to get acquainted with Him! If you are serving El Just Enough, you need to get to know El Shaddai – the God Who is more than enough! He is the God who engulfs you with supply.

Now most of us have experienced lack. Some have been through excruciating poverty. Paul said he knew how to live in abundance and how to live in lack (Philippians 4:11,12). Indeed, the verse following these about being able to do all things through Christ is his summary of being able to live through any economic circumstance. Paul knew that the secret of living through times of lack was to affirm the temporary nature of the circumstances and to declare the will of God that His people live an abundant life fully satisfied in their own selves with plenty to give away to good causes.

This is the secret to coming out of lack. You must change your consciousness of having not to one of having.

Look at what Jesus said in Mark’s Gospel:-

And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God. For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith. Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.     MARK 11:22-24 KJV

If you desire something, believe you receive it WHEN YOU PRAY. And you will have it. You have to receive the thing you desire by faith before you have it in its manifested form.

This is why so many believe in the lie of unanswered prayer. People equate manifestation with the receiving i.e.they don’t believe they have the thing they prayed for till it shows up. No, you have to “have” it first in faith form before you have it in manifestation. You have to believe you receive. Then you will have.

I like the Lexham English Bible version of verse 24:-

For this reason I say to you, whatever you pray and ask for, believe that you have received it, and it will be done for you. MARK 11:24 LEB

The minute you walk away from praying about something, you must see it as a thing you have received. Past tense. From that point on, it is a matter of thanksgiving for that thing, not supplication. In other words, telling God you don’t have that thing is unbelief. You have received it by faith and you are looking for the manifestation. That is how faith operates.

And that is how you faith your way out of lack.

What you HAVE in physical form is not the true measure of your wealth. If you are a child of God, you are an heir to Abraham’s blessing and this includes access to all of God’s resources. This means you have access to INFINITE SUPPLY. In truth, you HAVE all things (1 Corinthians 3:21-23).

This should be your confession.

“Thank You, Father that I am superabundantly supplied in all things (or you can state a specific thing here like finances) and I walk in Abraham’s billionaire blessing. I reign as a king in life by Jesus Christ and am funded superabundantly. Infinite supply is mine!”

Move from a place where you have not to a place where you have by RECEIVING the infinite supply that is yours in glory realms. This is is why Jesus spoke about banking in heaven – there is no safer place to store your riches! You don’t need to do anything to get these riches; they are yours!! All you have to do is RECEIVE them by faith and you will HAVE them in manifested form.

Jesus said the Father knows you have need of things to function on the earth plane. When you understand these things exist in a higher dimension, then you can see them “stepped down” into the physical dimension. In this higher dimension of God’s Kingdom, you are already wealthier than Midas.

Who you are in the spirit is the real you. What you have in the spirit is your true wealth.

Read my book GET RICH NOW!! for more information on coming out of lack instantly.

What You Hear Determines Your Supply

Then He said to them, “Take heed what you hear. With the same measure you use, it will be measured to you; and to you who hear, more will be given. For whoever has, to him more will be given; but whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.” MARK 4:24,25 NKJV

Here Jesus tells us to pay attention to what we hear.

What you hear impacts your life because it goes into the inner man and is planted there.

If you hear poverty, lack and failure, that is what you will see in your life. The more you hear, the more you will receive whatever it is you are paying attention to.

If you are flooding your consciousness with God’s Word on abundant supply and no-fear living, then you will walk in these things. The Bible calls this serving God. However, if you are always fretting over lack and debt, then you will receive more of these things.

You must accept this basic spiritual truth: Your financial increase is tied to what you are hearing.

The more you meditate and speak superabundance, the more you will manifest of this.

So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. ROMANS 10:17 NKJV

Faith is the substance of things hoped for. It is the real spiritual reality of things, the heavenly materiality that undergirds physical things.

Faith is the substance of abundance and riches just as it is the substance of healing or any other “thing” we desire from God.

So we could say that wealth and abundance come from hearing God’s Word. Financial increase comes from hearing God’s Word.

This is wonderful but it is even better when you realise that the word “comes” is not in the Greek. So the verse actually reads: “FAITH BY HEARING AND HEARING BY THE WORD OF GOD.”

Financial increase by hearing God’s Word!!

The word “comes” makes it sound like a Law of Attraction thing but although attracting the wealth that is in the world is certainly part of the Blessing, it goes much deeper than that. You see, we prosper from the inside out. The SUBSTANCE of superabundant supply is banked in our inner man. Your spirit is a purse that contains the heavenly substance of supply.

You don’t need to wait to get rich by this system. When you hear God’s Word on your covenant right to walk in Abraham’s Billionaire Blessing, the substance of wealth is immediately deposited in your spirit.

Hearing God’s Word on financial supply is how you make a deposit in your spirit bank.

This is why it is vital to constantly speak the Word on financial superabundance. This Word must not depart from your mouth (Joshua 1:8). As you hear yourself speak what God said on your money supply, so the SUBSTANCE of that supply becomes real inside you.

Your tongue determines your future because your tongue determines what you hear. And if you speak increase, then that is what you will receive. On the contrary, if you speak lack and shortage – or just neglect to speak increase – then even what you have will dwindle away from you or be taken from you.

The principle is that to walk in the life of abundant supply, you must engage your mouth by speaking that supply.

Here are some things you can say that will keep you walking in superabundance:-

God gives me power to get wealth

YHWH is my shield and my rapidly-increasing money supply

God girds me with wealth and makes my way perfect

God is my Source of supply; He is Infinite Supply to me

My income increases constantly

God Wills Your Business Success

Beware that you do not forget the LORD your God by not keeping His commandments, and His judgments, and His statutes, which I am commanding you today. Otherwise, when you have eaten and are full and have built and occupied good houses, and when your herds and your flocks multiply, and your silver and your gold multiply, and all that you have multiplies… DEUTERONOMY 8:11-14 MEV

Note something very important here. The result of partnering with God by covenant is that you eat till you are full. No skimpy eating just enough here – unless you need to lose a few pounds!

Also, the deal includes you occupying good houses. The word “good” can mean rich and valuable.

Remember that God is speaking to a largely agricultural population here when He speaks about herd and flocks multiplying. That was the kind of business they were in. If YOUR business is in ball bearings or pencils or selling insurance or you are a hairdresser, plumber or whatever – God will multiply what you do too!! That is the deal.

Just to be clearer than crystal, the Lord then gets to the very heart of the matter and delivers a severe blow to people who think that poverty is godly when He says: “And your silver and your gold multiply.”

“Does this mean God wants me to get rich in business?” Of course He does. Why else are you in business which is all about making a profit by providing goods and services that benefit others?

The whole point of being in business is to rack up cash.

Friend, you must settle this in your heart. God wants you rich and if you are in business, it is an absolute requirement. You are not defying God’s will by succeeding in business, you are fulfilling it!

The so-called morality of riches has nothing to do with riches themselves. Your heart is the deciding factor and it is absolutely fine to get rich provided you are not filled with avarice or bound by stinginess. In fact, being generous is both prevention and cure for these things. It is also a major factor in why you should prosper greatly. The more you accumulate, the more you can give away and use to fund good works.

Money has no morals. It is a tool, a servant, an instrument that is good or evil only to the extent the person using it is based on what they do with it. Using money to fund a drugs deal is evil but using it to build a health centre is wonderful. The money itself can do either.

This takes us into the very heart of the matter.

Money is about being a steward. It is a stewardship issue.

Look at this stewardship parable taught by Jesus:

As they heard these things, He continued and told them a parable, because He was near Jerusalem and because they thought the kingdom of God would immediately appear.

Therefore He said, “A nobleman went to a distant country to receive a kingdom and to return.  So he called his ten servants and entrusted to them ten pounds and said to them, ‘Trade until I come.’

“But his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We do not want this man to reign over us.’

“When he returned, having received the kingdom, he summoned these servants, to whom he had entrusted the money, that he might know what everyone gained by trading.

“The first came, saying, ‘Master, your pound has made ten pounds more.’

“He said to him, ‘Well done, good servant! Because you have been faithful in very little, take authority over ten cities.’

“The second came, saying, ‘Master, your pound has made five pounds more.’

“He said in like manner to him, ‘You, take authority over five cities.’

“Then another came, saying, ‘Master, look, here is your pound, which I have kept put away in a napkin.  For I feared you, because you are an exacting man. You collect what you did not deposit, and reap what you did not sow.’

“He said to him, ‘Out of your own mouth will I judge you, you wicked servant. You knew that I was an exacting man, collecting what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow. Why then did you not deposit my money in the bank, so that at my coming I might have collected it with interest?’

“Then he said to those who stood by, ‘Take the pound from him and give it to him who has ten pounds.’

“They said to him, ‘Master, he has ten pounds.’

“ ‘I tell you that to everyone who has will be given. But from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away from him.  But as for those enemies of mine, who would not let me reign over them, bring them here and slay them before me.’ ”

LUKE 19:11-27 MEV

Several things jump out at us here.

We know that the master is Jesus in the parable. Look at what He says to them: “Trade i.e. do business till I come.”

First thing we have to ask is: Did He mean this literally? If He did, many of us are in big trouble because we have had nothing to do with finance, business and making money grow. Those who say He didn’t are taking a big chance to say the least!

Then we see that multiplying money is both expected and rewarded. The reward is actually political power which shows us that God has no problem with rich people running things. It all depends on who has the money. That is the system and it is one He endorses and ascribes to.

Also, the principle of money goes to money. He who has, to him will be given more. That is fairness and justice from God’s perspective, if not man’s.

Then we see the scary part of all this. Jesus regards unwillingness to trade and make a profit a very uncool thing and denounces people like this as wicked servants. Ouch.

Not only do we have a mandate to get wealth and be rip-roaringly successful in business, we have the warning that failure to even engage is a major fail. In the Matthew 25 parable of the stewards, the unprofitable servant was cast into outer darkness, where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth.

That could be interpreted as living in Scuzzville. Or worse.

The point is, you and I have no excuse. Making money is not only fun – it is obligatory!

God’s will is your prosperity and you can make this the foundation of any business endeavour.

Get as much money as you can but don’t let the money get you is the rule of practice here.

Make God your partner in business and life today!

The Carpenter That Never Was

Did you know that the Bible never once says that Jesus was a carpenter?

It’s time for that old religious fiction of Jesus as some odd-jobbing joiner going about planing doors and fixing table legs for a few quid to get knocked right on the head.

Here is what the Bible says concerning the subject:-

And he went out from thence, and came into his own country; and his disciples follow him. And when the sabbath day was come, he began to teach in the synagogue: and many hearing him were astonished, saying, From whence hath this man these things? and what wisdom is this which is given unto him, that even such mighty works are wrought by his hands? Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house. And he could there do no mighty work, save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them. And he marvelled because of their unbelief. And he went round about the villages, teaching. MARK 6:1-6

Notice the most important thing here. THEY said: “Is not this the carpenter?” The people who heard Jesus preach were asking if He was the carpenter. As scholars have pointed out, the language used here conveys the idea they had not seen Jesus for some considerable time and were wondering where He had received His education.

There is also a possibility that they were calling Jesus a carpenter as a disparaging term in order to undermine His status as a Rabbi. This would suit the religious professionals who would be offended and jealous by Jesus’ popularity as a “lay” preacher, whatever that is.

The account in Matthew’s Gospel gives us even more perspective when it says they asked: “Is not this the carpenter’s son?”

Neither of these accounts in any way can be used to argue that Jesus was a carpenter. At the very least we could say that Joseph was from the text and that under normal circumstances it would be expected of Jesus to follow in His earthly father’s footsteps and take up his trade.

But the word “carpenter” itself is not by any means an argument that Joseph & Sons was the white van man outfit of its time. The Greek word tekton means an artisan i.e. a skilled workman – not necessarily with wood. It can have the meaning a producer of fabrics or just a general builder.

Many scholars believe that Joseph was a building contractor. Now if you know the building trade you will be aware that you can have builders from Joe Bloggs working out of his garage to giant construction firms like Miller Homes and Barratt.

In other words, Joseph may have been a building magnate.

You have to factor in three things here. Firstly, Joseph and Mary were both aristocrats of the House of David. Old money, if you like. Secondly, the family was funded by the enormous tribute paid to Jesus by the Magi camel train from the Parthian empire when He was an infant and identified as rightful heir to the Arsacid throne (see Matthew chapter 2). This colossal injection of wealth would have been more than enough to set Joseph up in a very prosperous business. Thirdly, Jesus’ uncle – Joseph of Arimathea – was the Nobilis Decurio, the Roman Minister of Mines. This was a higher ranking than Senator and Joseph was arguably the wealthiest man in the Roman Empire, having extensive mining interests particularly in Britannia.

The legends indicate that upon the death of His earthly stepfather, Jesus was apprenticed by this Joseph of Arimathea and became an international businessman. This is borne out by scripture where it is plain that Jesus was hard to recognise by people in His home town and His having to pay the didrachma Stranger Tax (Matthew 17:24-27).

So God’s Word never says that Jesus was a carpenter; only that other people said so as a means of recognising Him by His earthly family members.

Even if Jesus WAS a tekton, this could easily have meant a building tycoon as much as a handyman.

Jesus never self-identified as a carpenter but He did as a businessman and a king. Even as a 12 year old boy, Jesus saw Himself as being about His Father’s BUSINESS (Luke 2:49).

And herein is the lesson for you and I.

Do not identify yourself by what you do because in doing so, you limit yourself. If you are a plumber, see yourself as a business magnate. If you are a gardener, see yourself as a giant of commerce. You see, it’s not important what you are doing right now to make a living, it is important to see yourself as God sees you i.e. a steward of great wealth and an investor who multiplies resources and money.

You are about your Father’s business, not your own. If you are flipping burgers for a living right now, that’s ok. One day you might own a chain of restaurants.

Never let other people call you Joe the Plumber or Sally the Cleaner. You are not what you do, especially if you are in the process.

You are who and what God says you are.

Never limit yourself to the labels others would put on you. Jesus didn’t.

The only label that counts is the one God gives you.

Incidentally, when we think of Paul and his tent-making we could be tempted to think of him making wee two poles and a sheet tents for Boy Scouts. But, as Ed Silvoso points out in his awesome book Anointed For Business, tent-making was a very lucrative and highly skilled business which was all about making mobile dwellings for the super-rich.

As we saw from the word tekton, it is not impossible that Jesus’ building career – if indeed He had any – was the same as Paul’s.

The religious junk that Jesus was some poor fella scraping by all His life has to be purged from, our thinking.

Here’s how the Holy Spirit put it to me:

What business did Jesus have telling the rich young ruler to leave his business empire behind and enter the ministry if He hadn’t done the very same thing Himself?

Think about it, children….
